Stof Ceramic

Chemistry whizz and wild-sourced clay forager Mason Reed of Stof Ceramic. Enthralled by the many and varied possibilities of using wild-soured materials, Mason has dedicated his practice to understanding the chemistry of clay and glaze ingredients, focussing on local Victorian materials and working toward being 100% locally sourced.

Residing in Kinglake, Mason has some of Victoria's richest soils and oldest rocks that are a clay forager's delight. It is nothing short of amazing that rocks formed over hundreds of millions of years ago by massive geological shifts, can today be processed by human hands and turned into beautiful and functional pottery in just a few short weeks. A lover of Victoria's iron-rich clays, Mason creates handsome works that speak directly to their materiality.

Darkly coloured canisters and tubular vessels are richly pocked and bubbled like cooled lava flows, their subtle iridescent sheen- the result of iron fusing over the surface- glints like beetle wings, and we are reminded of Cambrian era Trilobites and mysterious prehistoric creatures. These pieces are incredibly beautiful to behold, their presence strong and commanding, their forms so elegant and perfectly balanced against their rugged exteriors. Even without their fascinating origin stories, these pieces are standout examples of ceramic beauty.
